The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Office Volunteers Needed
Description: Founded in 1949, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Our mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
We are currently looking for office volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks. Our office is located near the Tampa International Airport. Our office hours are M-F 9:00am - 5:00pm. Please contact Sheryl Olliff at Sheryl.Olliff@lls.org or call our office 813-963-6461, if interested.
On behalf of our entire staff, our patients and their families - thank you for your support and interest in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
If you are involved with any size group, such as Sunday School classes, adult groups, civic organizations, or any businesses that would like to help with this project, it would be greatly appreciated. We are asking for 1-gallon Ziploc bags filled with candy, snacks, food, notes, or anything nonperishable and non-liquid. Toiletry items should be bagged separately from food items. You can also put e-mail addresses and return addresses of adults in the bags so that you may receive responses from the troops you have helped.
We are trying to collect 140,000 stuffed bags so that we can send them out to our troops as Christmas gifts. In order for the bags to arrive on time with the holiday mail, we must have them no later than the end of October to send out to the chaplains at the different bases. The chaplains will distribute them at the appropriate time. Believe me, nothing says, ‘we love you and our prayers are with you’ like a goodie bag at Christmas time from someone you don't know who is all the way back home.
Last year we were able to ship 135,000 gallon bags over to 19 bases & 2 ships in forward deployed areas. The chaplains loaded them in Humvees Christmas Eve and delivered them to each and every one of our troops. The overwhelming response from the chaplains was “that was the best Christmas they had ever had when they were deployed for both themselves and our troops”.
I would be happy to come and speak to any groups interested in participating. Please remember that we must have all the bags in house by the end of October to get them shipped out in time.
Thanks so much for all of your help and support!

Project Name: Shamrock Toolkit Packets / Lock Up Packets Counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, Sarasota, Manatee, Hernando, Citrus Description: MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. With national headquarters in Tucson, MDA has more than 200 offices across the country, sponsors 220 hospital-affiliated clinics and supports nearly 400 research projects around the world.
MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy, and several other neuromuscular conditions.
The Association's comprehensive service program includes medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces.
MDA was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy, and a physician-scientist studying the disorder. Since its earliest days it has been energized by its number-one volunteer and national chairman, entertainer Jerry Lewis.
The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
The Tampa Office is currently in desperate need of volunteers to help our staff put together materials for our upcoming Shamrock Program and Lock Up programs.
